Mngonyama signed a two-year deal with the Pirates early last season, but spent only one season with the Buccaneers. The stylish defender, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, made just nine appearances in his time with the Pirates, which saw him released from the club.
According to an insider, injuries have been a big deal for the poor 28-year-old staying at the Pirates. And with Bucs signing several players in his position, his departure from the club was imminent.
Mngonyama is now looking to return to his old club, Maritzburg, which has hired a new manager at John Maduka.
Chances are good that he will return to the club (Maritzburg), the good thing is that his relationship with the team management is good and he has always behaved like a professional. I heard that he has already talked to someone to try and get back to playing for Maritzburg after being released by Pirates, “the source said.
But everything will definitely depend on the coach whether he wants it or not. Otherwise he could be signed in and end up not playing at all, so at the moment it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing if they will call him.
Another source, who is close to the player, says Mngonyama’s release came as a shock to him and the player was looking forward to a successful career in Pirates.
“I remember when he started negotiations with Pirates, he was very happy and happy to play for them (Pirates). It was a big deal, now it’s all a disappointment because he didn’t expect to be released so soon. “
