Telekom implements mandatory Covid-19 vaccination policy

Telekom has informed employees that it will be instituting a mandatory vaccination policy across the company for people accessing Telekom Group premises.

A spokesperson confirmed the policy to MyBroadband, clarifying that it only applies to employees and contractors.

Customers do not need to be vaccinated or have a negative PCR test to access Telkom stores.

MyBroadband has seen a letter regarding the new policy, signed by Ben van Zyl, head of Telkom Group’s procurement and contract management.

“In recent months, the Telekom Group has been examining the company’s procedures and responses to the Covid-19 vaccination and its impact on our employees and non-employees in our workplaces,” explained the latter.

Telekom argues that it has an obligation to provide a safe work environment that limits health and safety risk to the extent reasonably practicable.

“This commitment includes eliminating or minimizing the risks associated with exposure to disease where harm from such disease can be minimized through vaccination,” the letter reads.

According to Telekom, vaccination is an important tool to reduce the severity of symptoms of Covid-19 cases in the workplace, in communities and in South Africa as a whole.

“To this end, the Telekom Group has decided to adopt a vaccination policy, effective June 1, 2022, to protect the health of its employees, customers, service providers and other third parties from the dangers of Covid-19.”

The policy is as follows:

  • All employees and contractors entering Telekom Group premises must be vaccinated or at least have documentary evidence that they are Covid-19 risk free.
  • According to government regulations, unvaccinated individuals visiting a Telekom Group site must provide a negative PCR Covid-19 result not older than 72 hours.

“This is to protect the health and safety of Telekom employees and others who have access to Telekom Group premises,” the letter said.

“Telekom recognizes that vaccination against COVID-19 represents a significant opportunity to help the broader society manage the impact of the disease by either preventing or reducing the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. We therefore encourage everyone to get vaccinated.”

A Telekom spokesman told MyBroadband that the policy extends to employees visiting customer sites.
