Five shows coming up at KLPAC

SINCE Since its inception in 2005, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC) has made tremendous contributions to the local entertainment industry, particularly the theater scene. Thank you to founders Dato’ Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham Oam who continually work to give local artists a voice.

Even in these uncertain times, the KLPAC founders have opened their doors to promising creatives. In fact, KLPAC will be hosting a number of exciting shows over the next month alone. From classical concerts to humorous plays, here are five upcoming productions to catch at KLPAC.

Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival 2022

The Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival is back with new and exciting events. As usual, guests can look forward to a selection of rich and entertaining jazz activities – concerts, workshops and forums. But this time the guests can also look forward to a special treat.

For the first time, the upcoming jazz event will feature the Malaysian Junior Jazz Piano Competition. So, mark your calendars and show your support for tomorrow’s young stars!

Tchaikovsky – The Great Romantic Master

The final title on KLPAC’s July list, Tchaikovsky – The Great Romantic Master, is dedicated to the late Tchaikovsky. In fact, the show gives audiences a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of Tchaikovsky’s music. His legacy is awakened by the concert pianist Dr. Elaine Yap Sin Yee to life.

Yap, who recently completed her Doctorate in Musical Arts in piano playing, will open the show with the late composer’s classic, Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23, open.

Philly, here I come!

Joe Hasham OAM, founder of KLPAC, adapts Brian Friel’s 1964 Philadelphia Here I Come and brings this popular play back to the local stage. Hasham will revisit this iconic production with some of its original cast, including Datos Faridah and Patrick Teoh, as well as new actors.

Philly, here I come! revolves around a local boy named Danny Tan who lives in Cheras. Tan, feeling unfulfilled, decides to accept his aunt’s offer to come and live with her in Philadelphia. When he decides to do so, he fantasizes about his new life – one without his former lover and uncommunicative father.

Lawn Chamber series

Ever wanted to enjoy instrumental music in the comfort of the outdoors? Well, say no more because the Lawn Chamber series was designed to give you that experience! As the first-ever installment in their Lawn Chamber series, the klpac Symphonic Band will entertain guests outside on the venue’s lawn.

The band, which consists of 34 musicians, will perform crowd favorites such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lord of the Rings, If You Wish on the Star and many more. The klpac Symphonic Band also has a range of interactive activities for the audience.

Memories with the klpac String Orchestra

This upcoming orchestral concert, taking place at Pentas 2, will see the debut of Andrea Sim as resident conductor of the klpac String concert. Sim will mark her performance by performing a series of classical music and contemporary numbers.

On the classical front, the forthcoming event will feature numbers such as Bach’s Brandenburg and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. While the string orchestra throws in popular tracks like Test Drive (from How To Train Your Dragon) and the John Williams trilogy for its modern performances.
