(Awesome) Man’s best friend

THE The story begins with young Superman being taken aboard a spaceship by his father Jor-El (voiced by Keith David) to leave his home planet of Krypton. Superman’s best friend, his dog, jumps into the capsule with him. He grows into Krypto (Dwayne Johnson), his beloved canine companion with Superman-like abilities. He is a dog of steel with x-ray vision and the ability to fly. For those who don’t know, crypto has been part of the Superman mythos for 70 years.

As Clark’s relationship with Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde) grows more serious, he’s spending less and less time with crypto. Crypto, on the other hand, has more pressing concerns. When Lex Luthor (Marc Maron) obtains orange kryptonite in hopes of gaining the power to attack the Justice League, it turns out it only works on animals, not humans. The kyptonite gives powers to several shelter animals, including dog Ace (Kevin Hart), pig PB (Vanessa Bayer), turtle Merton (Natasha Lyonne), squirrel Chip (Diego Luna), and also Luthor’s guinea pig Lulu (Kate McKinnon), who becomes a villain .

When Krypto loses all of his superpowers, he enlists the help of the shelter animals to stop Lulu and save Superman. The film was very entertaining throughout. The fun factor of DC League of Super-Pets is enhanced by a fantastic combination of cool characters and voice acting, but I have to say McKinnon is the most powerful of the voices compared to everyone else. Johnson and Hart maintained their hilarious chemistry in this animated film, where viewers can enjoy their real-life friendship via the digital pups.

DC League of Super-Pets offers a meaningful message about building a “family of friends” amidst action and comedy. Ace has a moving backstory that explains how he ended up in a shelter, which explains why he maintains a rough facade to hide his fragility as a result of abandonment.

Many of the animal characters are heavily influenced by how they are perceived by humans, owners, and their own fellow creatures in an exhilarating little running issue that simmers behind the fun. Everyone has been belittled, reprimanded, or fired for their looks, behavior, or mere presence.

Thematically, the loyal, unconditional affection of pets for their mated humans stands in thematic contrast to all the unhappiness they face. This strong bond of bravery in the face of adversity, the need for attention, and the loyalty that is championed improves the lives of everyone involved, the pet and the owner. This simplicity is effective and translates into an easy win for the film.

Malaysian fans can also expect to see a character called Waffles, voiced by our very own Malaysian actor, Sean Lee. Waffles’ heavy Malaysian accent throughout the film will have you laughing and proud of the amusing local touch. DC League of Super-Pets is a must have for anyone looking for some escapism with entertaining characters. The DC League of Super-Pets mid-credits and end-credits scenes indicate that the film is the first in a series.
