We’re hiring an associate visual reporter

FiveThirtyEight is looking for a kind and creative person Associate Visual Journalist to become part of our interactive and graphic team. This entry-level position is ideal for recent graduates and career-changers, as it offers immediate access to the experience and mentoring needed to become a thriving member of the Interactives team. Day-to-day work primarily involves creating static graphics, but the Associate Visual Journalist will also have the opportunity to work on interactive elements and occasionally present their work.

The Associate Visual Journal will report to the Deputy Director, Interactive and Graphicsor the Chief Editor, Interactiveand work closely with the rest of the Interactives team, as well as with journalists and editors throughout the newsroom. This full-time role with benefits is a US-based position. Since our offices are located in New York, we prefer applicants based in the New York area, but full-time remote work may be considered.

Responsibility:

  • Creation of static and bespoke graphics to accompany daily and featured stories under the supervision of editors or more senior visual journalists
  • Contribute with code and design to smaller components of interactive projects as a sole contributor or to larger components when working closely with more senior visual journalists
  • Proactively learn all the new technical skills and domain knowledge needed to be successful in every project
  • Collaborate with the Interactives team and the rest of the editorial team by actively engaging in routine workflow, such as copy editing, story check-in and project retrospectives
  • Communicate the status of the project, including roadblocks or unexpected delays, to collaborators and stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Giving and receiving sincere feedback to colleagues, colleagues and managers

Basic qualifications:

  • A passion for visualizing data and creating charts that tell a clear story
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator
  • Some experience in using front-end web development technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • The ability to balance deadlines with opportunities to experiment and create new ways to visualize sports and political data
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with other FiveThirtyEight reporters on their own pace

Preferred qualifications:

  • A solid understanding of US politics, especially election politics, major US sports and / or science
  • Excellent knowledge of basic statistics
  • Excellent knowledge of at least one programming language, ideally JavaScript
