Shohei Ohtani scored two three-point homers and led with a career record eight points, but Whit Merrifield led the 11th inning with an RBI brace before the Kansas City Royals held out for a 12–11 win over Los Angeles. Angels Tuesday night.
Ohtani crushed a 423-foot homer in the sixth and a 438-foot shot in the ninth, giving him the biggest RBI game of his five-year career in the United States. The AL MVP then set the major league record in a single game for RBI by a player of Japanese descent with a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning.
But Ohtani’s eighth RBI wasn’t enough after Merrifield and Kyle Isbel drove into the race against Jose Quijada (0-2) at the start of 11th.
Daniel Mengden knocked out Mike Trout with two Angels at the base before Ohtani’s flyout and withdrew Jared Walsh in a late game popup. Mengden scored his first save of the season and second of his career when Kansas City held out for his fifth win in six games despite losing a five-run lead in the sixth and three in the ninth.
Carlos Santana scored four wins and drove in five record-breaking runs for the Royals, while rookie Bobby Witt Jr. had his first multi-homer game driving with four career-record runs. Kansas City was leading 6-1 midway through the sixth inning before the Angels’ top hitters came to life.
Dylan Coleman (2-1) pinned two Angels runners in tenth place.
Ohtani narrowed the Angels’ lead to 6-4 in sixth place when he brought his 14th homer to the center right. Royals owner Jonathan Heasley had thrown a four-stroke ball in the sixth inning before Ohtani’s shot chased him.
Kansas City then led 10-7 to go deep in ninth after Santana’s late single RBI and Witt’s two-point homer, but Tyler Wade picked and Mike Trout walked before Ohtani took them home with that undoubted explosion on the right.
Jared Walsh doubled, tripled and scored while leading in two runs for the Angels, but failed to strike for his second cycle in 11 days.
Santana started her monstrous game with a double RBI and a two-point homer before adding RBI singles in the sixth and eighth. Witt scored in the first inning, added a double RBI in the seventh and delivered a two-point homer in the ninth.
The Royals’ offense was solid early on against rookie Reid Detmers, who has struggled since pitching a no-hitter last month. Witt connected for his ninth homer after a 10-shot serve in the first, and Santana added a two-point shot in the fourth.
