Chipper Truck Café in Yonkers to receive $ 5,000 reward from Grubhub for part in Bronx hostage rescue

BRONX, New York (WABC) – A restaurant in Yonkers is about to be rewarded big by the Grubhub food delivery service, after a major decision that helped save the life of a young woman held hostage in the Bronx.

They say no good deeds go unpunished, but that’s not the case at Chipper Truck Café. Its owners are rewarded with $ 5,000 from the Grubhub food delivery service.

“They thanked us for what we did and for paying attention to the notes and for their appreciation they wanted to give us a reward,” said restaurant owner Alice Bermejo.

On Tuesday evening, the owners spoke to Eyewitness News reporter Sonia Rincon about the infamous note that arrived at the restaurant early Sunday morning. Along with the order were the “please call the police” instructions, sent by a 24-year-old woman who was being held against her in an apartment in the Bronx.

The restaurant video shows the moment when Bermejo’s daughter and another worker see the woman’s desperate request.

The police were called and a short time later, 32-year-old Kemoy Royal was arrested.

He is charged with rape, illegal detention and other counts.

It has also been linked to an unrelated sexual assault attempt days earlier.

Bermejo says a reward on Sunday was the last thing they had in mind.

“It’s shocking to us and we’re so thankful that he’s been caught and that the girl is fine,” said Bermejo.

The money will come in handy. Like most restaurants, things weren’t that cheerful for the bar during the pandemic. The restaurant had to let the courier go to cut costs.

Owners have turned to services like Uber Eats and Door Dash and, until a couple of months ago, Grubhub.

“Right now my head is in the fog, so I don’t know, but we could definitely use it, with everything that happened during the pandemic, it will definitely be a good use,” said Bermejo.

The 32-year-old suspect is being held on $ 200,000 bail.

Meanwhile, the compliments keep coming. The Yonkers City Council also has plans to honor the owners of the cafe.
